The Badlands of South Dakota
GUNSEL HORSE ADVENTURES is pleased to present another adventure in horseback riding and country to explore. Wind and water over the eons have created a wonderland east of Rapid City , South Dakota that until now you would normally view only a small portion of it from your car or the back of a motorcycle. Now you can ride the backcountry of the badlands on one of our gentle using horses. Sleeping arrangements are 8x8 range tents that have floors, window, and screens. Excellent food in quantities to handle the largest appetite prepared by our camp cook. Throw in lots of good conversation, cowboy poetry and songs, and you have the makings of an awesome vacation adventure.
For the last twelve years our trips in the Badlands of South Dakota have been well received and we are looking forward to another great year. May and June are fine times to visit the Badlands . The wildlife will have their young on the ground, the grass will be green, and the weather should be fantastic.
We try to evade the heat of summer, but late August and early September are spectacular. The grass and trees are starting to take on their fall colors. The herd animals will be starting to bunch up and it really makes an outstanding trip.
On most of our trips the last few years, we saw Antelope, Mule Deer, Whitetail deer, Coyotes, Big Horn sheep, Prairie Dogs and had the potential of seeing Mountain Lion, Bobcat and the newly relocated Black footed ferret. All this plus the rugged beauty of the South Dakota Badlands, with spectacular wind and rain sculptures, old homestead ruins make for a special four day adventure that is hard to beat.
On this pack trip, normally we move to one camp site, set up camp and then do cloverleaf rides from the base camp. All of our rides in the badlands have limited openings as we want to retain the wilderness feeling that we find our guests enjoy.
If you want to spend considerable time horseback, cover a lot of miles, see a wide variety of country from Agate Beds to Badlands and also wildlife, then the South Dakota Badlands ride is the one for you. The price for this Badlands adventure is $300.00 per day per person +5% Sales Tax with a four day minimum.
